Vounteer Spotlight: Barry Withington from Queenstown

  1. Tell us a little about yourself outside your role as volunteer.

A born and bred Invercargill lad, I have retired to Queenstown with my wife Anne, living in Shotover Country. I am a member at the Arrowtown Golf Club and also volunteer at the Queenstown Hospice Shop.

  1. What made you start volunteering at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open?

I volunteered for the first time earlier this year at the Open as a caddy. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience but unfortunately we did not qualify for the final two rounds. Spectated the last two days.

  1. What is your role and how long have you been volunteering?

For next year’s Open I have been appointed “Head Marshal” responsible for

co-ordinating the course volunteers from tee to green at both “The Hills & Millbrook” over the four days of the tournament. This will be my 2nd year as a volunteer at the open.

  1. What are some of your favourite memories from the tournament?

From last years’ tournament I would have to say my favourite memory was the distance the “Pro’s” can hit a golf ball – just amazing.

  1. Any player you are pulling for to win the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open this year?

It would be great to see a “Kiwi” at the top of the leader-board come Sunday afternoon.

  1. Who is your favourite all time golfer and why?

Having watched Lydia Ko over the last few years I would have to say she’s my favourite. Lydia doesn’t hit the ball as long as others on the LPGA tour but her accuracy is second to none in my opinion.

  1. What is your favourite golf memory either as a player or a spectator?

Probably my lowest round (77) in many years recently at Arrowtown .

  1. Tell us some fun facts about yourself.
As a muso, my claim to fame is being in a rock band back in the 1960’s in Invercargill playing alongside Roger McLachlan who was later the first bass player for “Little River Band” in Australia.
